Persian Shield (Strobilanthes dyeriana) is all about drama and shine, with broad, lance-shaped leaves shimmering in metallic purple and deep green. The foliage catches the light with an almost iridescent glow, showing off dark veining and a velvety texture that looks incredible on a side table, plant stand or as the hero in a mixed display. It’s the kind of plant that turns heads even from across the room, bringing bold colour where most houseplants play it safe.

Perfect for anyone wanting to break up a sea of green, Persian Shield offers a lush, tropical feel without being overly demanding. Give it warmth, humidity and decent light, and it will reward you with fast, bushy growth and that signature electric-purple foliage that looks good all year round.

Position Bright, indirect light is ideal; a spot near a window with filtered light will help maintain strong purple colour.
Temperature Prefers warm conditions of 18–26°C; keep above 10–12°C and away from draughts or cold windows.
Water Keep the potting mix lightly and consistently moist; water when the top 2–3 cm feels just dry and avoid letting it fully dry out or sit in soggy soil.
Fertiliser Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 3–4 weeks during the warmer growing months; no need to fertilise in winter.
Repotting Repot annually or when roots fill the pot, ideally in spring, using a rich, free-draining potting mix.
