Vanilla planifolia is a climbing orchid with smooth, fleshy green leaves and a graceful vining habit that gives it a soft tropical feel. As it grows, it winds upward and looks right at home on a support, where its fresh green foliage can become a striking vertical feature indoors or in warm sheltered outdoor spaces.
This is a beautiful pick for growers who love something a little different from the usual houseplant line-up. Vanilla orchids have a clean architectural look when young, then develop into longer trailing or climbing growth over time, making them especially appealing for trellises, greenhouse shelves, and bright plant corners with warmth and humidity.
| Position | Bright indirect light is best. Gentle morning sun can be fine, but protect from harsh afternoon sun. In warm climates it can also suit a sheltered outdoor spot with filtered light. |
| Temperature | Keep warm for best growth. Temperatures above 20°C will keep it moving well; growth slows between 15–20°C, and long periods below 15°C can cause stress or rot. |
| Water | Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to approach slight dryness before watering again. Do not let it sit soggy for long, especially in cooler weather. Reduce watering in winter while the plant is less active. |
| Fertiliser | Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted orchid or balanced indoor plant fertiliser. Larger, established plants can be fed more regularly through the warmer months. |
| Repotting | Repot only when established or when the mix has broken down. A loose, airy orchid-style mix and a support to climb will suit it best. |
